The 2-week course, taught by Dr Mathieu Blondeel and Dr Daniel Muth from the Institute for Environmental Studies, covered a broad range of issues and perspectives around the global energy transition. The 13 participants had different professional, national, and cultural backgrounds, which contributed to active discussions. In this short report, I would like to highlight a few aspects about energy and environmental justice that were addressed in the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, we discussed the question of who benefits from (which) energy. In her guest lecture, Prof. Joyeeta Gupta highlighted that there is still high potential shareholder profit in fossil fuels. This was confirmed during our excursion to the NGO <em>Milieudefensie<\/em>, the Dutch branch of Friends of the Earth, who spoke to us about their climate litigation cases against Shell and ING Bank. While shareholders try to profit from fossil fuel extraction as long as possible, those continuous investments could end up as stranded assets in countries of the Global South, leaving the financial benefits with the shareholders and the costs in the local community (Bos and Gupta, 2018; Gupta, Rempel and Verrest, 2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at renewable energies, on the other hand, subsidies tend to benefit the wealthier classes too, since they are the house owners who can install heat pumps or those who can afford a private electric vehicle. We visited the energy cooperative Zuiderlicht in Amsterdam, which seeks to include members of the community in the energy transition. The one-time membership fee of the cooperative is 1 \u20ac. However, even though this is financially accessible to many people, most members are relatively old and predominantly male. Hence, participation in the energy transition is also a question of who has the time and capacities to be engaged in an energy cooperative (VU Amsterdam, no date).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, we spoke about critical raw materials in the energy transition. While (hopefully) dependencies on fossil fuels and their providers decrease, new dependencies emerge. Those come on the one hand with a changing geopolitical landscape (Bradshaw, 2026). On the other hand, they create new patterns of extractivism and environmental degradation (Sovacool <em>et al.<\/em>, 2020; Andreucci <em>et al.<\/em>, 2023; Canelas and Carvalho, 2023; Riofrancos, 2025) that are emerging research foci of political ecologists and environmental justice scholars and activists, also from this network (e.g. Tittor, 2025). Energy transition and decarbonisation strategies consequently impact local and indigenous populations in other parts of the world and create profound injustices (Blondeel, Lehmann and Schoderer, 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third, energy poverty was addressed as a global phenomenon. According to figures from our lecture, around 230 million people (in 2023) live without access to electricity, and 2.1 billion people (25 % of the global population) do not have access to clean cooking facilities and consequently rely on unhealthy cooking fuels such as biomass, kerosene or coal. This has a gendered dimension, as predominantly women do the cooking and are thus more affected by the health impacts. This type of energy poverty occurs predominantly in the Global South. In the Global North, on the other hand, energy poverty is different. While nearly everyone in the EU has access to electricity and clean cooking facilities, close to 10% of the population are unable to keep their homes adequately warm (European Commission, no date) due to low incomes and high energy costs. One issue that really surprised me was that despite the growing focus on heat waves and the associated health and justice concerns, cold-related deaths are nine times more frequent than heat-related ones (Zhao <em>et al.<\/em>, 2021), even in the hottest regions of the Earth. Thus, energy poverty increases vulnerability during extreme temperature events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of those discussions I highlighted emphasise the need to continuously ask who is truly benefiting from the energy transition and who is left out. This is especially important, as words such as \u201cgreen\u201d, \u201clow-carbon\u201d, or \u201crenewable\u201d tend to obscure the injustices of energy systems.
