Exhibition Opening in Sicily: ‘Interrelated crises in the Anthropocene‘ is now on display in Naso

In mid-October, the photo installation by Hamburg photographer Barbara Dombrowski, accompanied by texts by Professor Silja Klepp, traveled to Naso in the Metropolitan Region of Messina. The exhibition opening, including a panel discussion, which was inaugurated on October 19th in cooperation with the Municipality of Naso by Mayor Gaetano Nanì, attracted over a hundred visitors. The exhibition had previously been shown in Bern and Kiel. The aim of the photographs and texts is to raise awareness of ecological issues through art and to foster a dialogue between science and society.

The photographic installations are the result of a journey by the authors to Sicily. They document the changes and deterioration of the coastal region mainly due to construction from the perspective of those affected. For the local population, burning forests and eroding coasts are everyday challenges that they primarily counter with additional concrete walls and other hard infrastructures. This has set off a vicious cycle that highlights the interdependence of humans and nature and the necessity of sustainable management of the environment. During a panel discussion with five guests, different perspectives and approaches to socially just coastal protection were vividly discussed.
