The Blue Justice Subgroup focuses on addressing the social and environmental injustices faced by coastal and maritime communities, particularly in relation to governance, access, and the sustainability of these areas. The group aims to promote discussions around equity and fairness in marine environments, questioning dominant frameworks that have not yet sufficiently captured the diversity and complexity of human-ocean relationships.
The group creates and organizes formats to encourage meaningful dialogue and collaboration in this complex field of research. For example, it developed a hybrid course on marine boundaries, which took place in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. This course offered an in-depth exploration of the complex dynamics of marine borders, focusing on the political, social, and environmental challenges specific to Latin American coastal contexts. Led by Celia Ruiz de Oña Plaza (CIMSUR-UNAM) and Víctor Velázquez Durán (ECOSUR-Tapachula), the course provided a platform for participants to critically engage with the injustices emerging in various maritime regions.
Additionally, the subgroup organizes virtual meetings to facilitate collaborative research planning, as well as a series of webinars exploring critical issues of Blue Justice. Panels have also been held at international conferences such as the V Latin American Congress on Environmental Conflicts in Brazil (2024) and the Enjust Network Conferences in Mexiko (2023) and Hamburg (2024), contributing to interdisciplinary discussions and offering critical perspectives on justice in marine spaces.
