Luis Rubén González Márquez is postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Inter-American Politics and Research (CIPR). He recently earned a PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Merced. He holds a B.A. in History from the University of El Salvador (UES), and a M.A. in Sociology from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, Ecuador (FLACSO Ecuador). Luis Ruben’s research agenda focuses on environmental and labor mobilization in marginalized territories. Putting in dialogue the studies on social movements and on extractivism, his dissertation examined the political outcomes of opposition campaigns against renewable energy megaprojects in the Central American isthmus. This project is based on a comparative-historical study of conflicts related to hydropower in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras between 1972 and 2019. He has collaborated in publications about anti-austerity protest, climate action, protest music, and environmental civic engagement.
