

Syed Muhammad Jaffar Abbas is a Research Associate at the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), where he works within the Urban Futures and Sustainability Transformation team. Originally from Pakistan, Jaffar holds a Master’s in Sustainability, Society & the Environment (SSE) from the University of Kiel. His research focuses on climate justice, climate mobility, loss and damage, and the social and cultural dimensions of climate change, with particular attention to vulnerable and marginalized communities in urban and Global South contexts.
His work explores how climate change affects people beyond economic losses, including impacts on culture, identity, social networks, and place attachment. Drawing on interdisciplinary and justice-oriented approaches, he examines climate governance, adaptation, human mobility, and socio-ecological transformation through distributive, procedural, recognitional, and transformative justice perspectives. His research has included work in Pakistan, Kenya, Indonesia, Brazil, and Germany, and contributes to international discussions on loss and damage finance, climate policy, and equitable urban futures.
